Karting
Recently the Too Fast crew
have entered several Iron Man races at Buckmore
Park, Kent, on their 80mph Thunder Karts :-)
The event starts with a 45 min briefing explaining
the rules for the event, then you pick up your one-piece suit,
gloves, helmet and rib guard and go out for about 5 minutes
timed practice to decide your grid position.
After 5 frantic minutes of practice, going
as fast as is humanly possible, wondering if you qualified
for the front row or not, it comes as a blow to find yourself
in 23rd place. All karts carry a transponder, so they know
exacly how fast you are going, you wonder just how fast have
you got to go to be on pole? Plus your forearms are killing
you after just 5 minutes, how will you survive an hour?
You line up on the grid in twos, the front
row looks a long way away, standing start, green light on
and away, I get past a few at the first fast right-hander,
then 36 karts arrive at the hairpin, I am diving up the inside
of a group of 10, with 6 more trying to go up my inside, it's
chaos, bumping sliding machines everywhere, somehow we all
get through.
A one Hour race is quite a marathon, and
you start to understand why its called the Iron Man, but it
does give you plenty of time to overtake people and at the
end of the race I get 12th place.
The Too Fast crew recommend
Buckmore Park, its well organised, with a high standard of
racing, and considering they are hire karts, a good standard
of karts and with 36 on the grid for a 1 hour race, you will
get all the action you can handle. Get your hands on the Thunderkart
and enjoy :-)
